Eastern Asian Origin - hardly!

    • I don't believe that Eastern European working dogs originated in East Asia. If for nothing else, then that the Chinese culture seems to have a knack for exaggerating animal features to the absurd and grotesque, whatever they get their hands on: See a pattern? No judgement here, just saying that function doesn't seem to be a priority in Chinese breeding. Dan

        • i totally agree with you dan, they for sure did not originate in east asia, although i would not use your analogy to backup what you say. the exaggerated dogs and other animals very likely have nothing to do with people who used working dogs in tibet long ago. however tibet is not the place where LGD originated first. i think the exaggerated dogs you know see have a lot to do with the really weird chines culture. the worst things i have ever seen concerning dogs and their treatment came from china. :@ the origins of mastiffs and LGDs is central asia, especially the caucasus. (caucasus is more or less both europe and central asia)
          • Oh how novel, more German racism... This time featuring the Chinese. I wonder, if had my Grandfathers been more trigger happy in the 40's, would the world be a more tolerant place?

                          • though I used to keep goldfishes myself and Love pekingese n Shih tzus, I must agree that chinese have a different style of breeding and creating things.. from an artistic point of view, I must appreciate their unique creativity, but a lot of health concerns come along with their artistic adroitness since they are dealing with living animals, where form doesn't always follow the function. and not only that, they create something entirely different and tend to say that what they have created is how the OLD dogs which are NOW extinct were, whether there was any old dog or whether there was any type which has become extinct, but preserved by few chinese fanciers .. Although I don't agree with breeding TMs to such an extent as to make tibetans perceiving those dogs to be a long coated dog coming as an outcome of neapolitan mastiff x st bernard, I do acknowledge the fact that there are many breeders in China who breed good TMs, and I'd like to congratulate them..
                            • The Chinese are not so stupid! They earn a lot of meters with skins, in this way!

[/quote1316835325] well, I've posted a few pics of my friend's bakharwal puppy in the relevant section (tibetan mastiff).. I'll post more pics of other bakharwals soon.. and regarding the theory of molosser origin, you have said it clearly that only a specific type of dogs from a specific region must be called as 'molossers' so if we go strictly by that theory, molossers originate in the molossian region, developed by the molossian tribesmen.. so that part is clear. even 'if' they have an ancestor from a different region, be it central asia or Himalayan Mountains, by this theory, they cannot be called as molossers as they are something else. about the question of ancestors of the Molossian dogs , there are several schools of thought, and staunch adherents to each of them. each one subscribes to the theory which they deem is more likely to be true, and I respect each one's opinion and faith in the theories.. In my opinion, it would be far more productive if we concentrate and contemplate more on how these dogs are at present, and work towards meeting the challenges they face.. some dogs face terrible challenges from what I know.. I think tending to improving their status as they stand now is of greater importance than to stir things up and end up in a mess. :) at the end of the day, I congratulate all the fanciers of mastiff type dogs who have dedicated so much of their time in reading and studying about these great dogs..
