First real encounter with a Fila

I notice that you live close to where I do currently. There aren't many Filas around us but one thing I have noticed is that the few that I have met in person up here are different than the ones I know and have met in Brazil (my homeland) both in structure and especially in temperament. Like other molossers around here, they tend to be softer so your average Joe has a better chance of being able to handle one ;) BTW nice user name,my buddy Jason Thorne is a part of that motocross group

    • I was at the dog park a few days ago with my Cane Corso and when I arrived their was a large mastiff. My wife suggested that it was a Fila and I thought there is no way there is a male intact fila in off leash dog park. None the less it did look like one and low and behold it was one. The dog was 10 moths old and 122lbs and friendly as anything and great with other dogs. He and my Corso got along great and there were no problems with the Fila and other dogs there either. Now I know this probably had a lot to do with his age, but after all I have read I was very surprised to see a Fila in this situation. Anyway it was my first time really spending time with a Fila and the owner and dog were a pleasure to be around. S.
      • With 10 months it is still a young molosser, however being friendly with people and other dogs is not that normal in true temperaments Filas. it depends on how is raised and socialized or a true temp. Fila. hugo

            • My female at 6 months old would not tolerate humans AT ALL not bad with other dogs I had a C.Corso at the same time I had her. She was my first encounter of owning a Fila . One of my favorite best PERSONAL guard dogs in my opinion .
              • My Filas do what i say, dont like but must.If something happen too mee then 4 Fila be guilty of a crime.Raise and socialized a Fila, den is the same if the Fila come from Brasil or Alaska,Alpha is Alpha and the Fila is the fila,, of course fila will protect, but you say dog shut up,its upp too people, training, training, gentle training[br][link={e_FILE}public/1244828490_17124_FT65466_filaboys_010.jpg][img:width=450&height=338]{e_FILE}public/1244828490_17124_FT65466_filaboys_010_.jpg">[/link][br]

                  • Just to add here that according to CAFIB(brazilian regognition club for the fila) a real fila (fila its a lot more than phenotype) should show strong aversion against any stranger since puppyhood. Brazilians even have a special term for this called "ojeriza". So this friendly fila had a serious temperament fault compared to the authentic fila and according my personal oppinion, at least should not be bred, also they should try to improve his temperament with professional help. Soft dogs coming out of guard breeds just destroy the breed. People considering for large dogs as pets only whithout guard/protection duties to curry on, should strictly make their pick out of so many other large/giant breeds but never out of a GUARD breed and then try to change the instict and the temperament ,for many generations (sometimes hundreds of years) of both humans and dogs worked very hard to pass the trait and none has the right to degenerate it out of any guard dog and breed.
                    • It's the same what cafi says, because the dog should live with the people, shall not eat everything what move. Fila Brasileiro Hawe all sense left, it's the same if the FBI or the Federal Cafi it is ... But Fila to adapt to city life, rural life, and it makes listening to Fila alphaa.Ei can kill in all, it needs to learn what is dangerous, and what is not, Fila is not a dinosaur
                      • He's still young, his true temperament may start to kick in as he matures.
