Hello everybody, I found some us-american and canadian websites/videos/.. about the Fila. How big ist the population there? Are they breeded in the USA and Canada? Or are there "only" imported dogs? Is there an association oder breedings club for this breed? I would be pleased about some information, greetings from Germany -

There are three breeders two in Canada both in Ontario the one I got my dog from a Portuguese man who raises beef cattle http://acorianokennels.com/ and a professional dog trainer http://wellingtonk9.com/ and one in the states http://dreamteamkennels.tripod.com/dreamteam/id19.html and this guy had a litter http://www.gampr.org/Fila.html they all have pictures but no video information is hard to come by you should share what you have found. Carla Cruz has written a few study's on all the Portuguese breeds and this one including the Spanish Mastiff, Rottweiler, Great Pyrenees, and Hungarian Pulli. This is a good read they are finding differences between kennel bred dogs vs aboriginal dogs in all breeds which makes sense breeding for form not function and breeding their own lines this is it. LIVESTOCK GUARDING AND HERDING DOG BREEDS FROM PORTUGAL MORPHOLOGICAL RELATIONSHIPS BASED ON BREED STANDARDS AND ON BIOMETRIC DATA http://www.alpetratinia.net/consulting/downloads_en.htm The first one is a one page poster down lower under publications is the 14 page report. on the downloads page their are many more studies half are in English. My dog has been great just a couple of months of biting pants and whatever else was moving when she was young but learned to leave the kids alone very quickly and has been great with them and us,you just have to teach them manners at a young age. i booked a male pup from a litter from two really nice filas a few months back but she only had one bitch in the litter so unfortunately i will have to wait he has bred the same male with a different bitch and so might take a male from that litter . not sure yet its casa da praia kennel in sao miguel azores, i seen a website from a breeder of huskys and filas in france about a year ago but could not look through it there was problems. is this who you are getting your dog from? i cant find there website anymore -

Hi! Yeah, I know Casa da Praia Kennels :) They have good dogs. I think you saw http://pagesperso-orange.fr/lapluiedeloups/ I will have a puppy of http://lesguerriersdivindasgard.perso.neuf.fr/ For me it's important to see the parents, the breeding place and talk with the breeder personally before I buy a puppy. The mother was born in France, the father was imported from the Acores. I have a good feeling about it, the parents have really good formed characters and the mother was succesful on breeding shows. So I can't wait for it :) I wish you good look for your future puppy. Will you breed with her in Irland? Do you have any FSM there? -

Good luck to both of you on your pups in the future you couldn't have picked a more versatile breed a real do anything go anywhere dog with proper socialization. They will surprise you with how quick they can do new tasks easily with little or no training quite sound, stable and responsive. Thanks Brotherwolf & Scarlett She's a looker alright and a worker. Those pictures were of Drumheller, Alberta, Canada the dinosaur capital of the world It's about 3 hours south of Edmonton It's like another world one minute it's all flat farmland then you drive down in this big crack in the earth and everything changes we were on vacation last August that is the river we walked over on the suspension bridge video.[br][link={e_FILE}public/1263102499_10130_FT69505_snc00290.jpg][img:width=500&height=375]{e_FILE}public/1263102499_10130_FT69505_snc00290_.jpg">[/link][br][br][link={e_FILE}public/1263102499_10130_FT69505_snc00291.jpg][img:width=500&height=375]{e_FILE}public/1263102499_10130_FT69505_snc00291_.jpg">[/link][br] -

Can someone tell me how the breed is with children and friendly guests? Do you think they could be trained as a Therapy dog? Yes or no please give your opinon as to why you feel as you do thank you. Scarlette -

The first two videos show children & adults she is safe I don't worry about her biting or being unstable in strange situations. I have two daughters 3 & 6 they are playing fetch in one of the last videos the dog was only a problem for a couple of months biting pants and whatever else but left the kids alone quite quickly I would come down hard & fast also she would stop when they yelled she was better with them than us just a puppy with prey drive no big deal she is safe with kids and visitors just a bit energetic. They need plenty of socialization I keep her loose in my front yard and lake lot so she can meet people & pets with the border enforced by my voice she doesn't stray I can go to store without worry. She will bark up a storm in the house at anything going by if I let her and she has stopped flyer and meter readers who try to try to come from the side but is fine when they come from the front if she's outside. I take her anywhere kids soccer games, the beach, the dogpark without worry she would make a great therapy dog she's friendly and outgoing just energetic would need exercise socialization and rules most Fila de Sao Miguel dogs could do therapy work or anything else if raised properly very sound stable dogs that need a leader. They may be more of a handful than most breeds but most of the labs i've seen lately have been unstable with dog aggression so ultimately it's up to you to raise the dog you want regardless of breed. -

Thanks for all the info you obivously have an awesome dog who has you wrapped around her paw. I know that how a dog is raised and socialized is hugely important, in what kind of dog you end up, however I do not think all breeds are suitable as Therapy dogs. Some are too protective even off territory, some dog aggressive, and some are very suspicious of strangers, finally some are such independent thinkers that even if you tell them to do something if they think its best they will ignore you and do as they feel best. At home these are good traits, but out and about dealing with the public, not desireable at all. Don't misunderstand I am not expecting or desiring a dog that wags its tail for everyone that says nice doggy. I like a dog that is more aloof, much more loyal, yet has a real soft spot for kids, and would never unprovoked attack a well meaning friendly stranger. ie some just reaching to pet them, some one acting strangely, ie yelling , trying to pick a fight with me crazy under the influence of something, thats different. Understand I am in a big city on a regular basis, and see regularly all kinds of such things. Thanks again Carlos Scarlette -

Ideally she's wrapped around my finger. Non guardian breeds are generally less aggressive but not necessarily easier to raise but a better choice for a therapy dog, but just because your breed is aggressive doesn't mean you have to allow it to be when it's not appropriate or that they will for no reason unless they have bad nerves or are fearful usually from limited or incorrect socialization but some dogs of any breed can still be a problem. [quote1263500962=Scarlette] finally some are such independent thinkers that even if you tell them to do something if they think its best they will ignore you and do as they feel best. [/quote1263500962] That comes down to who's will is stronger, knowledge, and quality time with your dog. -
