Meet George !

Nice pics there and what a grand dog you have mate. I didnt really associate DDB's being very atheletic to be honest, and told they didnt like running , but maybe with your dog this isnt the case :)

    • Here is my 2yr old male DDB George..... He isn't what would be considered a show DDB, however he's a supreme athlete and extremely vigorous.... This dog is an extremely fast runner and seems to have endless energy, even on a hot summer day...He is also extremely powerful, amazingly strong actually . He is very distrustful of strangers and very very protective... He is good when he's out on his leash, but heaven forbid a stranger intrudes on his territory..... He is very dog friendly and plays all the time with smaller dogs, he's very gentle and careful not to hurt other dogs....IMO he may represent what a working DDB should be...
      • I appologize for the double posting of pictures, this forum is acting up on me and things are going woky when I try posting anyways here is a few more of him
        • Wow ! I just realized I had already posted these pictures on this forum before in another thread !LOL
          • Fanstastic. Very athletic looking. Can you put some in the Gallery also?

I tell ya he isn't what we were expecting at all.... not even remotely close..... We read that these dogs are lazy and happy to live with very little exercise and were suitable to live in a apartment LOL !!! OMG it couldn't be further from the truth in my boys case..... He is PUMPED ! constantly on the go and into everything... Wants to play non stop, even when he has smaller dogs over to visit ( Pitbull ) its George always the last one standing looking for more....I have never seen a dog this large have this much energy, he bombs around my back yard faster then his pitbull buddy ( 55 lbs and leggy ) , he leaps off my 4' deck like he thinks he's superman... And he loves to run, and he runs fast... He has no issue keeping with my buddies doberman's over a good distance, and in a sprint he's quite a bit faster.... I never in a million years could have imagined a mastiff could move like this guy does, it is absolutely fantastic to watch him run...He lowers right down and takes giant long strides, his long body acting almost like a coil spring, his back legs make full movements from in front of his front to full out extended kicks in the back.... He has run with Boxers, Pitbulls, Dobermans, GSD's, Rottie's and another mastiff and in all out speed he has been the fastest.. He also seems to really enjoy racing other dogs and definitely has a competitive nature as he pushes really hard to outrun his buddies....... Another thing unique is that he is very graceful and light on his feet, his movements are very fluid and almost catlike,...My neighbor always comments how he moves like a big cat....... George is not overly heavy for his breed, he's likely around 110 lbs ( 130 lbs if you account for internet exaggeration LOL) , he is absolutely rock hard and ripped , all bone and muscle and sinew, not even a stitch of fat anywhere.. After a good run veins pop out in his shoulders , thighs and chest...it looks absolutely freaky !!! I am not sure of his background as I adopted him 1 year ago, but whatever it is he's a fantastic athlete that has been 100% healthy and vigorous and shows zero issues with heat, endurance or joints........The only downside is its hard to keep him entertained, he's always bored and looking for action...And no matter how much you play with him he's always looking for more...... He is also extremely distrustful of strangers, and extremely protective of his property and familly...He's not really viscous or mean , but he will definitely purposely intimidate new guests if he gets a chance to... dog of dissuasion he is ! With the family he's a big goofy puppy, and by far the most affectionate happy dog we have owned..
                • Sounds like the perfect dog.... as long as you have plenty of time for him!
                  • here he is at 18 months old playing with his buddy Steve... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vcffl-K7WuE
                    • Man that is a nice looking dog, and he sounds like a real character too - loved the video with the little bulldog haha never been a huge fan of DDB's because they all seem to be a little lazy, but this guy definitely seems to have the total package I love it :) congrats on an awesome dog.
                      • Thanks for the vid that was really funny, I loved the bit with the rope! the little bulldog growling all fierce and George just gives it a little tug lol. I'm starting to see a few more of these athletic handsome big buggers about now which is nice, heres a couple of pics of my friends DDB, just like george he is a bit of a live wire. I too like the way they are cat like in their movements they look stealthy. His name is Rocky but we all call him "ROCKZILLA DA CAT KILLA", he would chase cats day and night if he could. one more thing the bark he has on him is immense, there is NO WAY in hell I would go through the front door without my mate answering it first ;)[br][link={e_FILE}public/1258975447_10195_FT70946_rocky.jpg][img:width=450&height=338]{e_FILE}public/1258975447_10195_FT70946_rocky_.jpg">[/link][br][br][link={e_FILE}public/1258975447_10195_FT70946_rocky1.jpg][img:width=450&height=338]{e_FILE}public/1258975447_10195_FT70946_rocky1_.jpg">[/link][br]
                        • Thank you for all the kind words everybody... George is definitely an exceptional animal....It seems here in Canada many of the Bloodlines are much like George, they are smaller and more athletic with a longer snout... The DDB is not a recognized breed here in Canada, so the Bloodlines have not been altered for show purposes.... IMO too many breed have been destroyed for the purposes of shows, breeding for a certain look above and beyond health and capability...On the DDB forums they look at my boy like he is a poor example of the breed and for the most part turn their noses up at him.... However truth be told many of todays show dogs would be incapable of doing the work they were originally intended to do..They are breeding for excessive size and extremely short muzzles... I guess when the DDB looks like a giant English Bulldog they will be happy........I would love to see some of those show DDB's try to keep up with George in any form of athletics or work ! I look at many of the older pictures and drawings of the ancient DDB's and they look almost nothing like the modern show dogs....George looks and functions how the DDB would have been before they were altered for show purposes.........My boy is now 2 yrs old and afterhe goes thru some proper medical testing I am going to offer him up for stud to other Canadian DDB of the same type...I may be new to the breed, but I can see clear as day how important it is to maintain what the DDB was supposed to be.....
                          • He is a lovely specimen!
                            • My point exactly. Selection can do a lot to a breed or line. The variance in the breed allows for dogs like this to appear in litters just like in the Mastini. Keeping "pure" dogs also opens more proven working venues in which to test and compete with dogs in.
