            • Welcome !

              • Hello Jorge,  welcome to this great website and great group of people.  The Alano Espanol is an amazing breed and it was my choice of dog.  Unfortunately, it was hard to get one at the time that I was ready to get a dog.  I wanted to get my Alano from Los Tarantos in Spain, but nothing was available at the time.  Things are happen for a reason I guess, because I ended up getting a great dog with many similarities to the Alano, even though she is an all American girl :)

                • Many thanks to all of you for your very kind comments and welcome.

Castanha, what a pitty you did not wait! At Los Tarantos the dogs are not mass produced...the crosses have always a lot of thinking and do not happen that often.

right now Los Tarantos is very focused on recovering the Spanish Dogo / Spanish Presa. Soon I will share the info translated where you can read some interesting historical facts.

Just to give you a bit more about the Spanish Dogo: only recently we started talking about dog breeds, since it used to be dog types...hunting type, guarding, etc.

in the Alano type of dogs since ever you could find lighter dogs that were of course prey dogs but with great endurance (used to hunt wild boar) and heavier dogs, the Presas or Dogos! being the Dogos used mostly to deal with cattle in the slaughter house, countryside and later in the bullfight arena! Sometimes these were also the dogs used as guards and taken with the Conquistadores..Why the different sizes and weights? the dogs had only one purpose: FUNCTION

Los Tarantos together with Los Tercios and other very traditional breeders we are trying to recover the Dogo.

There is a lot to talk about the subject but I do not wish to be boring.

                  • The Spanish Alano is never boring ;)  I have a friend in Minnesota that flew to Spain twice to get his Alanos from Los Tarantos.  He got his first male about 10 years ago and then got a female about 6 years ago.  Amazing dogs, both of them.

I am not sure I understand what you mean with recovering "The Spanish Dogo/Presa"?  You are referring to a different breed right, not the Alano?

                    Thanks

                    • Please let me know his name in pm if can.

in a same litter of Alanos you will find 30-35 kg dogs (perfect to hunt wild boar in pack) and sometimes 25-30kg dogs (Villanos) and 35-45kg dogs...being the last ones remaining a of what was the Dogo type of Dogo. The Iberian Dogo.

Spanish Dogos tend to have not only heavier bone and more massive heads but more of a guardian temperament. Due to fact that were more powerful they were used to work the cattle, still are! They can hunt and they do hunt boar.

                      • Jorge,

I started researching the Perro de Torro this morning to see if there is new historical (sic) information on the breed.  I found this article that has some historical inferences but am not sure how valid it is.

Please tell me your opinion on this breed profile of the Spanish Bulldog - Perro de Toro that we have here on MD as written by Wolf.

As with any breed of antiquity there is must romantic fanaticism and conjecture and very little actual historical evidence to backup the claims of the fancier.  Any old article or historical photos, papers would be welcome.

                        • Hello Gary,

I translated that article :) (have a look at my profile here at the forum) and I am currently translating some more articles .

that was some of the information that I takes to you about. The autor of that historical article is Francisco (Fran) Rincón (Los Tercios) that with Javier Parra Gordillo founded the club of the Spanish Dogo. They are also the basis of the recovery of the Alano, 30 years ago.

all of their publications is the result of many years of hard work and research! 100% healthy working dogs!

if you allow me I will have a look at the profile later today.

                          kind regards

                          • Gary,

Just finished reading the link you have sent me...I do not agree with some points: origins and comments about the temperament.

we believe the Dogo as well as the Alano have been around for a very long time...as you could read in that brief article (if you allow me I will soon share a lot of information, that resulted from many years of research and field work).

about the temperaments...it is NOT an aggressive breed towards other dogs!!! They are required to work in groups of many dogs! Will they attack strange dogs that invade their property? Yes!

They extremely docile with the human family, very rarely you will find a dominant dog (over the family).

and yes...they will give their life to defend any family member or the property...but only if REALLY required!  although they will prey on big game since thy start walking they will not bite an human easily! It will have to be a real threat to their loved ones!

                            • Sorry that I've missed this post, but never the less: Very welcome on this great site Jorge :)
