Shikari dog
The word "Shikari' means hunter, so a "shikari kutta" or shikari dog can also be used as a generic term for a hunting dog or hound.
Indeed when people from Punjab see pics of my Caravan hound they refer to him as "shikari kutta" and he isnt a boar hound but a pure sighthound, they consider all sighthounds to be shikari kuttas too.
Another thing to keep in mind is that these old /historical records/anecdotes etc aren't always totally accurate. It is just a record of somebody's opinion regardless of his knowledge on the subject. This is especially seen more often when foreigners in an alien land comment on things they have absolutely no idea about. We see plenty of that even now ;-)

Yaj.

Pakistani Boarhound (shikari kutta, pakistani boar dogge, shikari hound) Molosserdog's breed profile: "Even though there have been many local strains of hunting dogs in Pakistan for centuries, the breed presently known as the Pakistani Boarhound is a relatively new creation. Developed by crossing the legendary Tazi hounds with the Gull Terr" http://molosserdogs.com/content3078.html But in the "Asiatick researches, or, Transactions of the society instituted in Bengal, for inquiring into the history and antiquities, the arts, sciences, and literature of Asia", t. 17, Asiatick Society (Calcutta, India), 1832 we can read: "Dogs are two species... the Hill Shikari, or hunting dog... To improve the breed, they sometimes cross the Shikari dog with the "Bownsa or Koya" (wild dog)...". http://books.google.ru/books?id=lygoAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA14&dq=Shikari+Dog#v=onepage&q=Shikari%20Dog&f=false 1832 year, shikari dog - old breed? Where is truth? -

i think shikari dogs mentioned in the book was different from pakistani boar hound. The shikari dog metioned in the book was referring to hunting dogs from mountain region of tibet where as the pakistani boar hound looks like recent creation by mixing different breeds (which i am not sure). I think bright in this forum has some gud pics of shikari dogs which was mentioned in the book. Ask him whether he could share some here.. -

There is a breed called "KATHA" here in pakistan which is breed from local hounds and bullterr. They are used for hunting purposes only. Although other hunting dogs do exist depending on their area. Sindh has their own long haired gaddi dogs for hunting/fighting/guarding known as the "Narri". Baluchistan has its own hounds and in punjab here, some people mate the greyhounds with the bully kutta so that the speed comes from the hounds and the strength from the bully. -
