What age did you switch your dog to adult food.

20 years ago I would keep them on puppy food until 1 year. I switched the Rottweiler (now 4 years) from senior food 8O 8O 8O (Low protien)at 8mos. to RAW. My current Catahoula has been on RAW since 8 wks. My current thoughts on the matter is the issue is about Quailty & Quanity and not so much about carbs/fats/protien %. To clearify, feed a QUALITY food and control the QUANITY that you feed. I've always feed the pups & young dogs 20% less than recommended by the dog food companys. Now I gage by activity & how dog looks & acts.

    • I have a male Cane Corso who is 9 months and just over 80 lbs now. At what time should I make the switch to adult food? I know what it says on the bag and what not and my vert has told me to hold out a bit as it will keep him from growing too fast, but I just wanted to see what opinions and experiences people have had on here. Thanks, MM.
      • I would feed him pup food till 1.25 years old 1 for smaller dogs 1.5 for bigger dogs. The biggest thing is keeping them lean don't feed him to much till they are adult. Being heavy is harder on the growing joints and over walkiing also. Also calcium levels in the food may be to high more that 2% is to much 1.5% would be better for a large dog. He sounds like you keep him lean he has plenty of time to grow.

          • I at the advice of 3 different vets and 2 different trainers NEVER gave my CC pup ..puppy food I give him evo red small bites (beef) mixed with evo yellow (Chicken) small bites with some pumpkin, at least 1 x amonth I give him sardines in olive oil 1/2 can a day 1/2 can 4 days later.. I also give raw marrow beef bones 2 x a month Rocco is now 6 mos and 10 days old and weighs 73.7 lbs (both parents over 130)as they told me it promotes to fast a growth rate in large breeds..he also gets flax seed oil and a bit of bone meal every 3rd day with a bit of Glucosamine 500mg every day.
            • My presas switch over from puppy food to adult about 6 months old.
              • I feed the same food for all ages. It is a 30/20 blend and is acceptable for all ages. Otherwise I would wait atleast a year to switch to adult.
                • Thanks a lot for all the help guys. Really appreciate it. Looks like I am going to wait a while longer and our vet said we should not change the food too early in our dogs life. Thanks again for all the advice. MM.
                  • I switched my Tosas at a year. I've looked at a few nutrition analysis panels (many websites have full panels), and I couldn't see much difference. In my opinion, the exact timing isn't critical.
