Hi Folks!! In the book of the Art of the Ballestería y Monterí, of the XVII century, the following description of the Alano and the Dogo can be read:
Presa dogs and cattle dogs. Of the first mentioned above, we can mentioned the Alano, which silhouette most be stronger than the lebrel (wolfhound), and which head has a broad mouth, wide forehead and with stop, deep eyes and bloody and terrifying look. The Alanos that even have a short and wide neck, are so powerful, that can beat any animal so fierce like the bull, and any kind of bigger animal, the same characteristics, are found in the Dogo, and the only difference is that they are of shorter body and big boned, the tail is shorter and hairy.
There are other dogs that we call mastines, that have as big body as the dogs mentioned above, they have big neck, and strong chest from the half of the body backwards, wrinkled heads, very strong and swift, are very brave, in the isolated mountains chase the wolf, defending the flock from them, and hand with hand fight with them and kill them, and for this reason is very appreciated his bravery, defeating so fierce animals, and for this effect, are of great value for the cattleman, without them, the flock could not be maintained.
The best dogs are the lebreles (deerhounds and wolfhounds) that are trained to chase deer, hogs, bears, they most be very slim, big eyes, long head with wrinkles when fighting, and very swift (it is very important to note here that he clearly separates the lebreles from the galgos -Spanish Greyhounds - and podencos)

Hi, Can you give more info? A few of us believe our White English Bulldogs from the Deep South of USA, used on farms, are decendents from various Spanish breed types, such as these you describe. They especially are used by cattlemen and farmers for fighting canines. They are also used for hunting wild boar. Please check out my site. Any info would be helpful. www.freewebs.com/aafb -
