black russian terrier

The Black Russian Terrier adapts very well to training and can be very good guard or companion dogs. I think your premise is correct in that they could be as responsive to training like the German Shepherd.  However, I have seen some very hard BRT that would make a German Shepherd Dogs run for the hills. They can be very intense dogs.  Training is required to get the desired behaviors.

        • hello , i think i've read in wikipedia that russians tried to create a multipotential breed of dog , with equal strength , tranibility and intelligence  as german shepherds and the result of their attempt is black russian terrier. is this breed comparable to german shepherds in police and military work as well as being a good companion dog ??

            • hello ,

              thank you .

              best regards

              • I don't have a lot of knowledge on this breed. I have seen them. I was at a dog show. There were over 75 Black Russian terriers. They were beautiful dogs. This caused me to do a little research on them. Keep in mind I said a little. It is my understanding that they were bred to do military work. The excel in doing guardian type work.

I'm not a huge fan of most modern day GSD. It is just my opinion that a Black Russian Terrier would be a great dog for this type of work when compared to a GSD. My preference would be them. Having not worked them or owned one I am basing my opinions and preferences on what I read about the breed, seeing them in person and experience with modern day GSD.

                • hello , thank you very much

                  • I considered a BRT before I got my Giant Schnauzer. Very intense. They do not do well with heat, I had a friend in Montana with 10 of them. He did not think they would do well with the small dogs (generally speaking) that I have. I did not find them to be as wiling or eager to work as a Dobie or German Shepherds Dog. My Giant is a peculiar worker but she's a superb guardian. He loves his BRTs but told me he misses his German Shepherds who would just comply rather than question.
