• Hi, this is my first post. I live in australia and I am considering one of the dogs from this breeder.http://www.abcalert.com/. Any thoughts would be great, I am unsure wether to get a bandog or a Neo from her.
• Opinons will vary on this but I personally like her dogs and her breeding program. I would suggest that you get the bandog. I like the Neos but the Bandog may have better longevity and functionality as a hard working dog. It all depends on what you will do with the dog so please elaborate a bit on your purpose for getting the dog.
• *cough*bandog*cough* :D
• ok time for a stupid question..where did that word bandog come from..does it simply mean "banned" as in "outlawed" or not wanted...just would like to know its root
• "Bandogge which is a huge dog, stubborn, uglier, eager, burthenouse of bodie, terrible and fearful to behold and often more fierce and fell than any Archadian or Corsican cur." It is assumed that the word "Bandogge" originated from the use of strong bonds and chains to secure the dogs.
• Don't forget to check out our Bandogge profile for all the info you seek.
• The "purpose for getting the dog". Well i guess Its been a few years since i've had a dog in my life, the x wife took the dogs with her when she moved out. We had a rottie bitch and a dougeXpressa pup. I looked at a litter of Neo pups when we got the pressaX and i was very inpressed with the mother. I am now in a place where i can care for a dog, i want a companion/protection/gaurd with a slightly lazy charactor. willing to sleep under a ute for half a day, but willing to defend said ute at the drop of a hat. Sound like anyone you know?
• Sounds like a Neo to me! The Bandog may be too high drive and active.
• the bandog is an old name used as another name for the old english mastiff, the name gos as far back as queen elizabets time. it was used for guarding, fightig, and hunting. some documets say where only used for this and this and another say only that and that. so there you have it.
• gary you remain the consummate diplomat...thats a take it back daffe-pp
• i read it in Dieter fleigs book Fighting dog breeds/history. in it he tells the description given by people (in old writings) in Queen elizabet of englands time. could be wrong it was a while since i read it.
• No problem daffe. Your information is not wrong. I put a link to the profile we have here on MD, which I think is the most historically accurate (not the most popular). Anyway, it is good to compare information sources and find the most logical common thread. The Bandog is derived from the Mastiff breeds but is not really an English Mastiff. Could have been a mixed English Mastiff at some point in time.... I have to see what my copy of the book says. All the best.
