This is a photo from the Dogue de Bordeaux album, apparently taken in 1966. Is there any information on this dog? Is it claimed to be a pure bred? The old photos I’ve seen dating back to the early 1900’s (and even prior) look pretty much as they do today. Surely this dog wouldn’t meet the breed standard? Not even in 1966. Or am I barking up the wrong tree? Regards, Denno. -

This is a cross post from another thread. MASTIFF_medelyan wrote: [blockquote]i will post pictures of old dogues de bordeaux later, so you can see the difference between the dogue de bordeaux more than hundred years ago and now.[/blockquote] [blockquote]maybe they had the opinion that if the dogs aren´t able to guard and fight anymore they at least should look "mean" and have many wrinkles and short but broad muzzle.[/blockquote] The above photo's are claimed to be "old Dogues". However, I’m still a bit inclined to “Say it ain’t so Joe”. If anyone has any information to the contrary feel free to challenge me, but I'm still inclined to think that such old photos are Bandogs loosely called Dogues(?) (but then Babigirl played a trump card with her long muzzled Dogue de Bordeaux)! The dogs I’ve posted below are from the early 1900’s, one of them is of a notorious fighter dated 1910, the other is dated 1920. Both of them are short muzzled and look much the same as the breed standard calls for today. -

Maybe it's just my eyes, but the earlier Dogues look like healthy Neopolitan Mastiffs, to me. Or at least somewhere betw. Spanish Bulldogs and Neo's. I think certain Bandogs lines and modern CC's have a similar appearance. The dog from 1920 DOES NOT look like the other dogs. The dog from the 60's may be a DDB, but looks different from all of them. I'm actually gla dthis post was made. It's motivated me to raise a question I've been wondering over the past week.

Interesting photos. How does the Bullmastiff perform in the Brazilian heat? I have friends in Recife where it's 80s year round and very few Molossers survive there. I do know that some Brazilian Police like the Tropa de Elite take pride...
