Hunting with the Dogo Argentino
Jaboa,
I am just wondering why you hunt boars, intruding on land, "sport", letting your dogs do what they do well? it sounds so brutal, but I am a softy I suppose. It was hard to pick up on all the terminology as well, could you please explain further the dogs part in the hunt, protection gear, collars, tools and what not....

Hi Garry , This how I do it . 2 black mouthed curs are turned loose in a area that we know has wild boar . When the bay is made we come in with my 3 Dogos on lead , at 50 ft the Dogos are loosed . Rock catches on the nose, Johan , the ear , Gator , my anchor, the cheek. The boars are killed with knife or a short spear. All dogs wear protective gear, curs cut collars , Dogos cut collars & vests . Jaboa......DONT TREAD ON ME !!! -

jaboa - Don't your dogo get hot in the vests? I had a friend use one on his Catahoula in some palmettos..the dog got heated up pretty bad. Now he just uses cut collars. -

Platz , Here up north over heating not a problem & the Dogos are kept on lead until we get to the bay. Athena , here are some boar hunting terms : Bay - when the boar stops running & makes a stand . Catch - when a dog bites hold of a boar & subdues it for the kill or to be caught & tied , for relocation. Anchor dog : your strongest dog ; a fight stopper. All my protective gear is made out of Kevlar , Nylon & Felt . As far as brutality , the Dogo was created for the hunt and by the hunt , without it there is nothing ......without the past there is no future.... -

Platz , I live in Michigan. We do have wild boar here, the DNR don't like to or want to admit that they are here , but they are ...??? As near as we can figure out a game ranch went under about 15 yrs ago . They kicked all the boar loose near a town named Yale. They have been spreading ever since & what's nice about it these are pure eurasian wild boar & you don't need a hunting tag , because theyare classified as escaped livestock you can hunt all year around , day or night . No more packing up the dogs & driving down south !!! -

Athena dont feel so bad for the boar. the ferral pig is a nasty killer that would destroy native species' habitat and uproot trees ----basically ruin a lot of stuff for native wildlife. Boars are a formidable creature and can kill a dog easily. The sport of it is finding one ---catching it --- killing or relocating---and keeping you dogs alive in the process. I dont know if many people still doit with the knife but you have got to have a huge set of you know whats to get close enough to a (nasty big tusk) boar and sticking him. us city folks are not used to slaughtering animals so it sounds harsh. But if you eat meat thats what is realdeal hunting! If I ate swine i might want to try it-----maybe not....LOL this is an old photo i found on the internet a long time ago. -

Yes, a knife is still used. Using a knife is the safest way for sake of the dogs and the fastest & most humane way for the boar. -

Good job and much respect to all who hunt their breeding stock! -

:D Its the best when you get to hunt the pups and dogs you have bred. Thats my favorite part, watching the young ones starting to hunt. Alot of people can't and dont breed their own, due to lack of room for young ones, and some won't or dont hunt bitches, which I think is madness. Some of the best in my pack have been bitches. I just put a new album up on: http://moonstonekennels.photosite.com I took my 12 month old dogo male out on the weekend and got two boars. One smaller one, and the other was 120lber. Great place to be, with pigs not far from the back door. -

Interesting photos. How does the Bullmastiff perform in the Brazilian heat? I have friends in Recife where it's 80s year round and very few Molossers survive there. I do know that some Brazilian Police like the Tropa de Elite take pride...
