Where to find dogs like these?

Good Luck on your search. I know of bandog breeders, but I don't think they're what you want.

    • I am looking for resources on bandog or performance mastiff breeders that health test and aim at raising pack working dogs. I am looking for dogs that have solid temperament with the family and kids as well as household animals(dogs and cats). I want to do my homework since I will be getting this dog most likely late spring early summer next year. Thank you in advance for the help.

        • Katrina Hartwell's dogs would fit the bill IMO, but they're on the other side of the world.

              • I wouldn't know but are the likes of thunderdome and etc not breeding along these lines? How are they not? The health testing? The calm stability? I only hear good things about them so I'd imagine they shouldn't disappoint. To me you're not asking for anything unreasonable. In fact, I don't see why any bandog line should be different to what you describe. Why would anyone want dog aggression or an animal that's unstable around children?
                • I know a lot of programs started with gamebred APBTs so this is why I ask regarding dog agression. My issue with health testing is that I want to know that I am getting a puppy with the probability of having healthy joints so I can work it in different venues. I am not looking for a huge dog or anything massive, just a confident line that will protect the family and act indifferent towards strangers.
                  • Look at Steel Traps Herder/AbxNeo dogs, I think they're right up your alley.
                    • Great call on SteelTrap/TwoEagles, Mike. You should look into Roger's stuff, David. Very nice dogs.
                      • Again don't know these dogs specifically (used to follow steel trap when they were just abs and neo/abs) but wouldn't herder blood sharpen them up and make them less tolerant of the typical shenanigans of children than a bull/mastiff? I mean you pay a price for all the positives herders bring to the table, and I think the main negative is that hair trigger, relative to bull/mastiff types. Ultimately making them better PP dogs better for working a decoy and etc, but not necessarily better family dogs.
                        • I've seen Riker(the big male Roger has) and that dog was anything but intolerant of kids, new people and dogs. So long as the new person wasn't out of line, he was fine with you, same for the dogs. Far as I know, that is across the board in that breeding.
                          • Fair enough, would just be a concern for me adding herder blood but with diligence you could definitely breed away from that highly strung herdery-ness.
                            • Yeah, but Roger does not really have or even likes the "high strung" prey monster herders, he prefers a calmer more serious temperament. He breeds for all around family protectors, not sporty dogs. Riker is very level headed, he is one of my favorites currently on his yard, but he has a couple of new dogs on the lot now, so that might change if I visit again. Not to speak for Roger, but there are no heavy herder influences there like in other programs, just one Dutch shepherd cross. He has mentioned using more "old school" GSD, but only has toyed with the idea to date. Mostly, the stuff is going back to bulldog blood right now. Consider the herder influence a bit of seasoning, and less a main ingredient...
                              • Yes. I didn't want to go into depth about his goings on, as I don't want to mis speak about a good friends program. All I can say, is if I had the room, Id take a Riker in a heartbeat.
