CHIGGERS

A good flea and tick remedy should take care of the parasites.  To prevent reinfestation and kill resident chiggers you could use Cedar bedding and dust the area with Diatomaceous earth (DTE).

Diatomite is used as an insecticide, due to its abrasive and physico-sorptive properties. The fine powder absorbs lipids from the waxy outer layer of insects' exoskeletons, causing them to dehydrate. Arthropods die as a result of the water pressure deficiency, based on Fick's law of diffusion. This also works against gastropods and is commonly employed in gardening to defeat slugs. However, since slugs inhabit humid environments, efficacy is very low. It is sometimes mixed with an attractant or other additives to increase its effectiveness. Medical-grade diatomite is sometimes used to de-worm both animals and humans, with questionable efficacy. It is commonly used in lieu of boric acid, and can be used to help control and possibly eliminate bed bughouse dust mitecockroach and flea infestations. This material has wide application for insect control in grain storage.

In order to be effective as an insecticide, diatomaceous earth must be uncalcinated (i.e., it must not be heat-treated prior to application) and have a mean particle size below about 12 microns (food grade).

It can be spread where the dog sleeps and will be quite effective at resolving the issue. Follow this link for more information.

    • so my dogs have been itching and have a rash on their skin. i couldnt figure out what was causing it. i cleaned all their bedding etc, then i got a rash. turns out the dogs and i both got chiggers. mine has resolved, but in think the chiggers are in their bedding still. anyone have any experience with this pest or how to get rid of them?  what about treatment for the dogs?
