Cataract surgery

I am sorry you and your dog is going through this difficult situation. Wearing the cone collar is not that bad as many of my dogs have had to wear it for different reasons.  Since your dog is loosing its sight - it is probably time to bring him inside for a more mundane lifestyle.  It is quite obvious that this dog is very special to you and you will do what is right by him. Please let us know how the ERG goes and what you decide to do.

One of my dogs a 13 month old CAO have a aggressiv form of cataract on both eyes. He have lost almost all of his vision in only 3 weeks. This is of course very stressfull for him and painfull for me to watch. If he passes the ERG test he is scheduled for surgery in a few weeks.

My concern is after the surgery. 2 different eye drops 3-4 times a day and a cone collar. This is a dog who is outside with the animals almost all the time and does not do well inside.

I would like to hear your opinion and experiences on the surgery, results, complication

      • No one with any experiences on this surgery to share?

I will get the results from the ERG on monday, and then I must make my decision

          • Sorry to hear about your dog. I can understand why this may be difficult for you/ I have never had that surgery on any of my dogs. I don't know of anyone that has either. I wish I could be of more help.

I have had a few dogs that has worn a cone. Most did well with the con. Only one kept taking it off.

            • The results from the ERG was good. Both retinas where ok. Scheduled for surgery 26/1

He is now completely blind and I have moved him Indoors, and only let him out in leash and not with the other dogs.

Yes he is a very special dog for me, I have not had any dog quite like him. Mentaly he is very mature for his young age and physically he is slender and agile, very fast and strong and not as heavy and saint Bernard looking as many modern central asian ovtjarkas do. I was looking forward to mating him with a very similar female, but that is not possible anymore. The risk that the offspring would get the same cataract is very high.

              • That is some good news in this situation. I trust and hope that the surgery will be successful and he will be able to see again.  It is very obvious that you love this dog very much and he is in good hands.  We need more owners like you.

                Best wishes.

                • I hope all goes well with the surgery.  Even though you can't breed him like you desired it sounds like he is still an awesome, amazing dog and companion.
