Dog Attack Statistics for US and Canada

In a study by Dogbites.org it is indicated that the combination of molosser breeds, including pit bulls, rottweilers, presa canarios, cane corsos, mastiffs, dogo argentinos, fila brasieros, sharpeis, boxers, and their mixes, inflict over 80% of maiming, disfiguring or fatal wounds. There were three points of discussion from the article that I am inviting you to share you opinions on.

Discussion notes:

  • Even if the pit bull category was "split four ways," attacks by pit bulls and their closest relatives would still outnumber attacks by any other dog breed.
  • Pit bulls are noteworthy for attacking adults almost as frequently as children. This is a very rare pattern, only seen elsewhere in the bullmastiff/presa canario line.
  • If a pit bull or rottweiler has a bad moment, instead of a person being bitten, often a person is maimed for life or killed. This has created off-the-chart actuarial risk.

I have attached the full study for your reading pleasure. It is just a couple pages so please have a look.

    • I think one of the conclusions is that CO owners are very responsable owners!

      • Let's hope they don't fall in the wrong hands then...

gary, do you see it happening in america ?

        • It has not happened yet. I know of a few that got into the wrong hands but the owners soon realized the tremendous animal they had and gave them up to more experienced owners. I actually think anyone can own one of these dogs if the have the time and dedication to ensure their training and well being.
