Does Commercial Kibble Kill Dogs?

That was a very lengthy read, I have read similar literature previously, and, although some of the writing can make sense, I find that from my own experience and from friends and relatives, that just feeding kibble alone, is not good enough. I have known people who just fed plain kibble and nothing else, and learned that their dogs died of Bloat at a very young age. Though I have to interject, that the owners of the dogs were not aware that their kids would play with the dogs before and after feeding time, therefore contributing to the Bloat. I, myself, incorporate kibble with BARF, 50/50 and find it to be very effective.

    • So I saw a link on www.molossertalk.com and clicked it. It took me to a page that claims that Cane Corsi life is shortened by 8 years because of commercial dog foods. The link is below so check it out and let us know what you think. http://www.secretdogconspiracy.com/1/s/Cane%20Corso_.php I have always wondered how we could feed dogs from a bag and keep them healthy.

        • Gary, I read that web site before and from my own personal experience, knowledge of kibbles and kibble manufacturing processes and animal rendering plants, there is truth in it and there is also hype and propaganda. It's like most of the things that you'll read about kibble diets vs, BARF vs other natural diets, each method has their own "nutritional experts" who can make arguments for each of the many feeding strategies and against the others. I mean I've even seen ludicrous arguments on web sites that kibbles should be fed to captive wolves instead of raw meats. I've also seen healthy looking dogs that are in their mid teens that have been fed nothing but really garbage low quality kibbles. So I would recommend to everybody not to believe everything that you read on the internet and recognize that the truth usually lies somewhere in between.
          • There's a big difference between surviving on a diet and thriving on a diet. Commom sence tells you that all living things were designed to eat natural unprocessed foods.
            • I agree with you Platz. Has anybody heard of the Honest Kitchen? Here their info: http://www.thehonestkitchen.com/index.shtml Iam interested to know what everyone thinks. Looks like a good idea.
              • Was obvioiusly an "over the top" ad.

It smells kind of weird but it's great stuff. A little bit pricey though. My Dane loved it.
                  • I agree with Paco! It all depends what are but in there and where does it come from! I feed 50/50 - kibble and raw and it has worked for my dogs.
                    • I am still learning about dogs (this pup is my first) but I know that my last cat lived 18 years and ate Science Diet kibble his whole life. He only received human food on very rare occassions. He was healthy until the last year of his life, when he developed kidney problems--something common in cats. Consequently, my puppy's diet is founded on a higher grade kibble with some occassional raw foods added. My mom feeds kibble and raw and she has a 12 yr old collie mix with mild arthritis that still looks great. I guess it's the old adage "all things in moderation".
                      • I would put your cat as one in the category that just was lucky enough to have good genes. Science diet is one of the brands of a large corporation with the advertising budget and subsidization of greedy veterinary colleges and unsuspecting veterinary students to hype it as a good food. In reality is a low quality over priced food that I would never in good conscience feed to a dog.
                        • Genes do play a roll. My grandmother drank , smoked and lived life to the fullest. She died at 93. Cats can live longer than dogs. The people I work for have one that is 24. Science Diet, like alot of commercial foods. Contain By-products and grain. The grain is used to keep the meat parts together. All this during the manufacturing process is heated at high tempeture. Which destroys most of the nutrients. This maybe a bit off topic. I have three cats. No dog yet. Still doing research. My cats eat a mix of Science Diet R/D for weight loss. And Wellness Complete Health. This product contains Deboned chicken as its first ingredient. No grains or fillers. My small female eats Wellness Super mix. She doesn't need to lose weight at ten pounds. Ive tried to substitute Orijen. When you open the bag. Its smells like real food. This product contains 75% meat and fish and vegetables.Cooked at low tempeture. No grains. My large male cat, which is the size of a Cocker Spaniel. His weight is is over 29lbs. His target weight is 25lbs. I tried to just give him the Wellness . He had loose stools. So I mixed the food up. He and the smaller male (which is my avatar) Did not like the Orijen. I learned about this food from this forum. Here is their info: http://www.championpetfoods.com/orijen/orijen/ The female eats the Orijen. its a high quality food. Then are many good foods. Just do your research. Richard :D

                            • I have done my research and found the food witch I like in everyway and this is why I like it http://www.canidae.com/recall.html Here is a interesting Recall link http://www.dogaware.com/recall.html
                              • Jesus, I can't even fathom the cost of feeding all my mastini dog food. Raw is cheaper, better, and they look great! I wouldn't change it for the world. Now my cat- was fed mainly kibble. I switched him between Candidae and Evo- but his fave was Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul. He also cleaned up after the dogs foods and got lots of raw goodies. Loved ground beef and chicken guts.
