i run into an unfortunate situation this weekend. i was at the beach with my dog and another guy's dog got loose and here i was in the middle of a dog fight. with the help of the other owner we were able to separate the dogs.
i took him to the vet, as he had a bad cut on his ear, who prescribed antibiotic. amoxy 250, 2 capsule 3 times per day for 5 days.
the thing is that i am suppose to breed him on thursday and he will still be on antibiotic. does anyone have experience in breeding a male who is still on antibiotic. does it have a chance of affecting the males fertilty or the resulting litter. any advice is wellcome
thanks in advance
Amoxi is a lightweight antibiotic, BUT- Any antibiotic can screw up a dogs semen counts, sometimes for months. I would take him to the vet and have them pull him and get a count a few days before the breeding.
thanks guys for the reply. i really appreciate the advice
do you have any back up(online proof) for what you said
you scared me to death
i am breeding amstaff and we(I) have only one male in the country and only one female
i need this breeding for the sake of keeping what i have. i will not be able to import again due to goverment regulations(i know i can wait for the next heat but she is on right now) and she is almost 2 yrs. i have skip one heat ( due to some advice from this site) and i want a litter
any advice is welcome
no use taking to the vet again as he is recovering nicely and the result of the sperm count will be out ONLY after my female will be out of season.(friday or monday)
looking forward for your reply
ANYBODY ELSE PLEASE
who is sarah. can she please help. i know i was the tough guy but sometimes even the toughest need help
I was at my vets today for rocco's 2nd shots and I asked her your ? She told me that if your dog has no side effects from the antibotics, she would stop giving them for 24-48 hours ( IF wound was NOT infected) breed then put back on. Give the dog extra water w/o the pills to help flush his system. She said she saw no reason if wound was not infected to postpone again. Good LucK.
I asked my vet this question also and he said that giving a dog antibiotics before mating him will not cause any problems but if you are unsure then to take the dog off the antibiotics 72 hours before the male and female are put together.
He also said that some males if natually bred are put on antibiotics to stop him transferring any bacteria to the female.
Here my biggest worry is giving heartworm prevention and I do not give heart worm to my female for 3 months prior to mating.
Many vet recommend not to give breeding stock heartworm prevention ever.
I would take him off the medication as long as the wound does not look inflammed or has puss.
If your going to use him over a 3 day period keep him off the medication and then give him the remaining tablets afterwards.
I gave my female and male antibiotics one month before mating this time just gone due to 2 phantom pregnancies and she carried 11 pups.
Hope this helped and good Luck

Tibetan mastiffs are monstrous dogs that survive high in the mountains, and now we know their ability to thrive in such harsh and low-oxygen environs comes from an extra shot of wolfishness in their genes. Do you believe it?
