Longevity
I've just lost my first male sarplaninac this last summer (2003) and he was only 7year always good healt and in a few weeks his hart was old.
I never understand that and never accept the lost of my best friend!
He was beautiful, a great champion in beauty show, agilty, listening and giving his love and thrust to me!

Aleksa uploaded a wonderful picture of an 11 year old Sarplaninac. I am curious to know the average life span of this breed. Would seem to be about the same as the CO at approximately 12 years. Does anyone have knowledge of experience of this? I understand that diet and living conditions are significant factors in longevity. Oh and yes predators in the working environment too! Our oldest CO will be 6 years old this summer. -

Hi Gary Concerning Sarplaninac life time, it is somewhere between 10 and 15 years, depending on conditions of life. Dogs bred on mountains are usually more vital and resilient then dogs bred in kennels but still their life time is sometimes less then 10 years, because there is constant struggle on mountain: 1. harsh climate, 2. fighting predators, 3. fighting for a place in pack (particularly for the place of "alpha" dog, especially if there is more then one male in the pack), 4. lack of food etc; and you just can't compare those two, but when you put all this together, yes, you can say that their life time is approximately 12 years, like the CO's. Take care, Aleksa -

Thank you Aleksa. When I am out with my dogs I usually get the questions. 1. What kind of dog is that? 2. Do they eat a lot? 3. How much does he/she weigh? 4. How long do they live? That made me curious about the longevity of similar breeds like the Sar. Thank you . -

Hello Urok, I am sorry about your lost! It is always sad when we loose a loved one be it human or animal. All the best. -

Fedra was gone 2 weeks after she turned 14. Died of liver tumor complications. If it wasn't for that I believe she would live for few more years, she still had very beautiful head, clear eyes and healthy teeth, even her hair, although she was very slow and wanted to sleep all day which is understandable. She was a city dog. My grandmothers oldest shar which lived in the mountains went when he was 18!!!
