        • Question for ANYONE. Why are herders known or THOUGHT of for being so great in THIS type of work? Also, why are they used by Police forces the world over? I MUST say that I think other og can be trained for police work. My OPINION

          • Well, let's think about it, shall we. Say the police finds that Bullterriers or American Bulldogs do an outstanding job, just like this GSD here. So they decide to train them as sentry dogs for Police work. Now, say a car thief is racing from police at 100mph, by now helicopters are roaming the skies, dozens of police cars are following him. Eventually, the stolen car gets out of control, hits a building or tree and the thief tries to escape on foot. The police quickly catches up to him and for safety reasons they decide to send in two American Bulldogs to take him down. The dogs attack as they have been trained, one goes for the arm, the other for his left sneaker ... and the guy is down, his t-shirt get's ripped apart and his sagging pants come off too. The officers slowly approach the suspect, no need to hurry. They arrest him and book him for 23 felony violations and defecating in public. All of this is now of course being filmed by helicopters from CNN, ABC, NBC and Channel 10 Live News at 8. Headline story "Police use vicious pitbulls - almost kill teenager". Before you know it, you have a scandal on your hands, why did the police overreact? Who allowed using "vicious pitbulls" in the first place? Self-declared "dog experts" will show up in TV morning shows, explain how American Bulldogs are actually much bigger and stronger than pitbulls, that white bull breeds have historically been used to catch escaped slaves and that this video scene reminded her of just that (nevermind that the car thief was actually of Russian/Italian descent). In the end, the Chief of Police resigns, the mayor can't run for governor anymore, 4 Police officers are put on leave without pay, the "vicious pitbulls" are euthanized of course, the car thief walks free and gets paid an undisclosed sum for unnecessary cruelty, physical harm and psychological damages. Oh yeah, and ABs get banned in many cities. On the other hand they could have just used the accepted gold standard, the GSD. These dogs convey professionalism, perform extremely well, take down a suspect in seconds, ... and somehow always portray a dog in uniform; they just look like official police dogs. I don't know if you've noticed, but in airports they often use Labs now to sniff for food or explosives etc. Here even a GSD seems to appear too 'official' as nobody wants to alarm travelers or give them a feeling of living in a police state. In many instances it's simply about perception. And GSDs are perceived as correct dogs, appropriate for serious police work. Dan

            • LMAO, okay I get it, that was PERFECT it's all about perception. MOST people, the media and my own MOTHER think "pitbulls" are baby killers. Thanks Dan, but why use my beloved AB as an example? Just kidding I know perfectly well why, LOL. Thanks again, I GUESS I knew all of this just need a refresher.

                • Also, these dogs are built for working with man. Their sense of duty and biddability is second to none. Most herders are known for this. Take a strong dog that is biddable and used to working with man and cultivate it for 100 years or so... Do not get me wrong I love my bull breeds, but bully breeds are not of the same origin, therefore they tend to lack this in general. They were formed for animal work, which means their "nature" is as Tonedog puts it, gripping prey.

                    • I am truly amazed at what these dogs can do, how precise they can follow instructions. However, still not my type of dog. I know many of them, and they're bred so high strung, they grate on my nerves. Some are calm enough around the house, but I'm told many have to be locked away as they're just too wired. Also, I've seen a few cases of redirection (with Rotties too), where the handler/owner actually got bitten.

                      • @ Astibus do U rate GSDs or Malinois higher for this work and why? The last years we hear more and more that the Malinois is the top pp dog. Thank U for your opinion in advance. Jen

[/quote1317410143] I can see this for some dogs from working lines that could be way too intense. But that should not be the norm. My own GSDs for example were the perfect house dogs. They would do precisely what you wanted them to do - at all times. My Shars, not so much; they can inadvertently be quite destructive to property. GSDs that are too wired and even bite their handler may have been completely excluded from family life and only kept for competitions. I knew many dogs that were kept in a crate all day except for when they went to the Schutzhund club twice a week. An intelligent dog will naturally go bananas here. And say what you will, GSDs are super intelligent dogs, no doubt. GSDs ARE my type of dog to a certain degree, but Shars on the other hand are truly my kind - 100%. Even though both breeds are nothing alike. I like em for very different reasons. Just as I like offroad Jeeps and little roadsters, both automobiles, both with very different purpose.

They use Beagles also. So they can be more discreet when snooping for contraband. Richard 8-)

                            • I have to agree, a true GSD that is well bred is not a wired destructive fuzz ball. That is what sport selection and breeding has done to them. Our training director prefers the "older" temperament. Wonderful dogs to behold.
